Participants will learn the basics of stop-motion animation and construct moveable puppets and backgrounds using fabric, yarn, paint and trims. This exciting workshop will focus on collaboration and the animation process. Participants will work together to create a short film starring their handmade characters and backgrounds.
We will use a set up consisting of a digital camera and computer software designed specifically for stop motion animation to capture the still images for the animation. The participants will learn how to create the animation both in front of and behind the camera. Areas of focus include how to create moveable crafts suitable for this way of filming, creating sets, animating the characters in the film, and working with the camp leaders to actually shoot and direct some of the film.
Options for simple at home set-ups will be discussed to encourage possibilities for further exploration after the class.
Greta has taught stop motion to Cornell students, co-taught classes at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in animation for the last two summers, and participated extensively in Iowa’s own Tiny Circus….a fantastic collaborative animation project based in Grinnell. (tinycircus.org)
